It's All About the Names

Well, since this is my post I should start with an introductory post, but being a blogger for many years on end it just doesn't sound appealing. So I'm just going to jump right in!

I guess I will clarify that this blog is built around my family history! Enough background, I want to get to business.

Today an idea came upon me, I remember a little family history lesson I had at school in eighth grade. We were all assigned to research the meaning of our names to begin. Then we put together a folder of a bit of our family history, which I most likely have somewhere in the room I am currently in. I loved learning about my name. For fun I started to search the names of my closest ancestors and found the meaning to their names! What an ideal way to start, I do believe so.

My name:
EMMA, an Old French and Old German name meaning "entire, universal"
That is right. I'm universal. Which I guess at a glance is a strange discription but it means a lot to me. I see beauty in it. Which leads me to say:
Oh how I love my name, there is not a name I would change it for.
Though it does seem like every child under seven has my name (it has ranked amongst the most popular girl names for many, many years)I still adore it.
I also want to mention my middle name...

ROSE, Latian orgin name meaning for well... a flower called a rose. Through some distant relative German meaning it also means fame. I absolutely love my middle name too!

Well, enough about me.

On my fathers side comes the surname Phipps. (So, I guess this is still about a part of my name...)

PHIPPS,"a lover of horses"
I like horses enough. Actually it is one of my arbitary dreams to own a horse, this may explain that inkling!

My fathers name:
BLAINE, which is Gaelic for yellow.

His father's name:
JOHN, Hebrew orgin meaning "God is gracious". Also a very biblical important name.

His mother's name:
CLARA, Latin for "bright and famous". Isn't it just a beautiful name?

My mother's side surname:
TUCKER, Old English meaning "garment maker", often relating to the person's occupation in medeval Britain.

My mother's name:
MARY, Latin for"star of the sea"; Hebrew for "wished-for child, rebellion, and "sea of bitterness"... Some of those meanings were rather harsh and don't really fit my dear mother. But then again I am not sure how yellow fits my father...

Her father's name:
ERNEST, German for "serious battle to the death".

Her mother's name:
CONNIE, Latin for "steadfast", English for "Constancy".
What a perfect name for my grandma. I really love her name also.

Oh, I am about to speak of myself again!
How I got my name:
My mother wanted to name all of her children after ancestorical names and my names are found in my ancestory. Not all of my siblings were completely named after ancestors, took my father some time to get on board with the pattern. I love having my names tied to ancestory. I feel more connected to my family and the lives they led to lead to me.

LET'S TALK ABOUT YOU!
How to find meaning of your name, family names, or names in general:
google.com
How predictable? Google is a great source, while it can also be a poor source.
I typed in "Emma name meaning" and lists upon lists appeared!
I used www.thinkbabynames.com which gives name meanings in just the amount I wanted.
